Motherboard support should be there, as the same mobo in a different model number ships with that CPU.ī) Not causing too much of an issue with heatĬ) Not causing instability/random shut downsĭ) If it's worth seeing if I could upgrade the cooling (seeing if the other models have different fans/heatsink).Į) I'll probably hold off on the RAM upgrade, 4GB is enough (if it's going to be too much with the CPU upgrade in terms of the power supply/heat

My main worry is BIOS support, I've just updated to the latest version, so that should be okay. That's running a few programs, streaming BBC, photoshop open, fireworks open and so on. At the moment my temps are around 55 and 37 for the harddrive. I use the laptop on a cooling stand, and always on the desk, so it gets the best ventilation it can. I'm thinking I might upgrade to one of the mid-range ones instead then, I'm not really sure, it's only going to cost around £100 for the CPU. Yeh it's only the one I carry around with me, on the coach and such, as the other one is too expensive to lose, drop or get stolen. It has possibly one of the worst cooling systems ever designed. Oh jesus, I just saw what laptop that is. Price isn't an issue - however BIOS/Mobo support is, as well as stability, heat and so on.ĪMD Phenom II N970 Quad 2.20-GHz processor (Would be between £120 and £269)ĪMD Phenom II Triple-Core N850 2.2GHz Would cost £60 new including shippingĪMD Phenom II N950 Quad 2.10-GHz processor Would cost £72 used including shipping (£100 new)ĪMD Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile N620 2.8GHz (£50 including shipping, used)ĪMD Phenom II P960 Quad 1.80-GHz processor (would be £50 used, but is 25W like my current CPU) I'm just wondering, I was always of the assumption that laptops were hardly upgradable, if at all. This is the service guide (where CPU support is listed) ĭo you think it's a wise move? I really hope so, I'm quite impressed with the switchable graphics that I have, but the CPU is quite weak. I'm thinking of putting in 6GB of RAM (up from 4GB) and a backlit keyboard too. Now, will the 35W CPU cause an issue, as my current one is rated at 25W? I'm hoping, well praying, that this will work, but I know the service guide covers a vast amount of laptops in this series. Now at the moment is has the Amd Athon II P340 2.0Ghz. Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = ".On my lower spec laptop (DV6 3100sa), the service guide reports that it supports an unsurprising amount of CPUs, the one I am most interested in is the AMD Phenom II N970 Quad 2.20-GHz processor (2.0-MB L2 cache, 1333-MHz FSB, 35W, 3.6 gigatransfers/second) (HP part number 635496-001) Any ideas on what parts i can buy to get this game running at peak proformance. I dont think this laptop should be THIS bad with games. The lag was still there a little bit with that. When i tried to play BattleField 3 the only way i could play without constant lag was to lower my resolution to the lowest, then it was missing shapes and shuch. not sure if i even need to upgrade seeing as i just bought this laptop about 2 months ago. So i can play a few better games, like BattleField 3.
